Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night is an American rock band that came together in Los Angeles in the late 1960s around vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. Rather than relying on a single frontman, the group built its identity around three distinctive lead voices backed by a powerful rock band. Three Dog Night became particularly skilled at finding songs by talented songwriters and transforming them through vocal arrangements and energetic performances, drawing from rock, pop, soul, and R&B along the way.
Beginning in the late 1960s, Three Dog Night produced an exceptional run of hit singles. One, Easy to Be Hard, Mama Told Me (Not to Come), Joy to the World, An Old Fashioned Love Song, Black and White, and Shambala became some of the band’s best-known recordings. Their material introduced millions of listeners to songs written by figures including Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Hoyt Axton, Paul Williams, and Laura Nyro. Joy to the World became their biggest hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the defining singles of 1971.
Three Dog Night’s success was closely tied to an intensive touring schedule during the band’s commercial peak. The original group eventually broke up in 1976, but Hutton and Wells revived Three Dog Night during the 1980s and returned to regular touring. Wells continued performing with the band until health issues forced him to retire, and he died in 2015. Chuck Negron, who had pursued a separate solo career for many years, died in 2026. Through the different chapters of its history, Three Dog Night’s music has remained a familiar part of classic rock and pop culture.
