The Pixies

Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986. The classic lineup brought together vocalist and guitarist Black Francis, lead guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist and vocalist Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering. Drawing from punk, surf rock, noise, and melodic pop, Pixies developed a sound built around unusual song structures, sharp guitar contrasts, and dramatic shifts between quiet passages and explosive volume. Although their initial commercial success in the United States was relatively modest, the band’s music would become highly influential on the alternative rock movement that followed.
After the Come On Pilgrim mini-album in 1987, Pixies released Surfer Rosa in 1988 and Doolittle in 1989. Songs including Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man, and Debaser became enduring parts of their catalog. The band followed with Bossanova in 1990 and Trompe le Monde in 1991 before tensions within the group brought their original run to an end. Over time, the reputation of those early recordings continued to grow, with Pixies frequently cited as an important influence on the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s.
Pixies reunited in 2004 with Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering and returned to extensive touring after more than a decade apart. Deal left the band in 2013, and Pixies continued recording and performing with later bassists, eventually joined by Emma Richardson. Their reunion era has produced several new studio albums while taking the band to theaters, festivals, and concert stages around the world, introducing their music to generations of listeners who discovered Pixies long after the original lineup separated.
