The Outfield was an English rock band formed in London during the 1980s by guitarist and songwriter John Spinks, vocalist and bassist Tony Lewis, and drummer Alan Jackman. The trio developed a melodic blend of pop rock, power pop, and guitar-driven rock built around Spinks’ songwriting and Lewis’ distinctive high-register vocals. Although British, The Outfield found its greatest commercial success in the United States, where its polished melodies and memorable guitar hooks connected strongly with rock and pop audiences during the mid-1980s.

The band’s breakthrough came with its 1985 debut album, Play Deep. The record reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and produced Your Love, which became The Outfield’s signature song and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other songs from the album included Say It Isn’t So, All the Love, and Everytime You Cry. The band followed with Bangin’ in 1987 and Voices of Babylon in 1989, producing additional songs such as Since You’ve Been Gone and Voices of Babylon. While later releases never matched the commercial impact of Play Deep, The Outfield continued recording through different lineup configurations and periods of activity.

The Outfield also spent years performing and touring, particularly during the height of its popularity in the 1980s. John Spinks and Tony Lewis remained the creative partnership at the heart of the group, while Alan Jackman eventually returned after an extended absence to play on the band’s final studio album, Replay. The Outfield’s story came to an end following Spinks’ death from cancer in 2014 at the age of 60. Lewis later pursued solo music before his death in 2020 at the age of 62.
