Sponge is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992. Fronted by vocalist Vinnie Dombroski, the band emerged during the alternative rock boom of the 1990s with a sound that blended alternative rock, post-grunge, and hard rock. Their debut album, Rotting Piñata, arrived in 1994 and brought Sponge national attention with songs such as Plowed and Molly (Sixteen Candles). The album went on to earn gold certification in the United States, establishing the band as a recognizable part of the decade’s alternative rock scene.

Sponge followed its breakthrough with Wax Ecstatic in 1996, featuring songs such as Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina) and Have You Seen Mary. Although later releases did not achieve the same commercial success as Rotting Piñata, the band continued recording and performing through numerous lineup changes, with Dombroski remaining its longtime frontman. Sponge’s combination of melodic hooks, distorted guitars, and Detroit rock influences has helped songs like Plowed maintain a lasting presence among fans of 1990s alternative rock.
