Shadows Fall is an American heavy metal band formed in Massachusetts in the mid-1990s by guitarists Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand. Drawing from thrash metal, melodic death metal, hardcore, and traditional heavy metal, the band developed a guitar-driven sound that became closely associated with the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. After an early period that included future All That Remains vocalist Philip Labonte, Brian Fair joined as lead vocalist and appeared on Of One Blood in 2000, beginning the era that would bring Shadows Fall its widest recognition.

The band’s profile grew considerably with The Art of Balance in 2002 and The War Within in 2004. Songs such as Thoughts Without Words, The Power of I and I, What Drives the Weak, and Inspiration on Demand showcased the combination of aggressive riffs, melodic guitar work, and heavy vocals that defined their sound. The War Within reached No. 20 on the Billboard 200, while the band’s growing success eventually led to a major-label deal and the release of Threads of Life in 2007. Shadows Fall also earned two Grammy nominations during this period.

Years of touring helped establish Shadows Fall as an important live presence in American metal. The band appeared on Ozzfest, toured internationally, and shared stages with numerous major metal acts before stepping away from regular touring after Fire from the Sky in 2012. Following several years of inactivity, Shadows Fall reunited for a 2021 show and gradually returned to performing. The longtime lineup of Brian Fair, Jonathan Donais, Matt Bachand, Paul Romanko, and Jason Bittner has since continued working together, releasing new music for the first time in more than a decade.
