Rise Against is an American punk rock band formed in Chicago in 1999. Originally known as Transistor Revolt, the group was founded around vocalist and guitarist Tim McIlrath, bassist Joe Principe, guitarist Dan Wleklinski, and drummer Toni Tintari. After adopting the name Rise Against, the band released its debut album, The Unraveling, in 2001, followed by Revolutions per Minute in 2003. Their early music combined the speed and intensity of hardcore punk with melodic songwriting, socially conscious lyrics, and a growing sense of musical ambition.

A move to Geffen Records brought Rise Against to a much wider audience with Siren Song of the Counter Culture in 2004. Songs such as Give It All and Swing Life Away expanded the band’s following, while The Sufferer & the Witness followed in 2006 with Ready to Fall and Prayer of the Refugee. Later songs including Re-Education (Through Labor) and Savior helped establish Rise Against as one of the most successful punk rock bands to emerge during the 2000s. Throughout that growth, the band remained known for lyrics addressing social, political, environmental, and animal-rights issues.

Touring has been a major part of Rise Against’s career, taking the band from punk clubs to major theaters, arenas, festivals, and international tours. Tim McIlrath and Joe Principe have remained at the center of the group through lineup changes, while guitarist Zach Blair and drummer Brandon Barnes became longtime members of its best-known modern lineup. Despite moving far beyond their underground beginnings, Rise Against has maintained the energetic live approach and socially conscious identity that shaped its earliest records.
