Motorhead

Motörhead was an English rock band formed in London in 1975 by bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister after his departure from Hawkwind. Built around Lemmy’s unmistakable voice, distorted bass, and uncompromising approach to rock and roll, the band developed a sound that drew from hard rock, heavy metal, and punk without fitting neatly into any one category. The classic lineup came together with guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, creating the raw, aggressive sound that would make Motörhead one of the most distinctive bands in heavy music.

The band’s breakthrough years produced Overkill and Bomber in 1979, followed by Ace of Spades in 1980. Songs such as Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and (We Are) The Road Crew became lasting parts of the Motörhead catalog, while the 1981 live album No Sleep ’til Hammersmith captured the intensity that made the band such a formidable live act. Although the lineup changed repeatedly over the years, Lemmy remained the constant presence, eventually joined by longtime guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee.

Touring was at the heart of Motörhead’s identity throughout its four-decade career. The band played thousands of shows, from clubs and theaters to arenas and major festivals around the world, building a following that crossed the traditional boundaries between metal, punk, and hard rock. Motörhead continued recording and touring until 2015, releasing its final studio album, Bad Magic, that year. Lemmy died on December 28, 2015, at the age of 70, and the band came to an end with him.
