Jeff Healey was a Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose unmistakable playing style made him one of the most distinctive blues-rock guitarists of his generation. Born in Toronto in 1966, Healey lost his sight as a young child due to retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. He began playing guitar at the age of three and developed an unusual technique of laying the instrument flat across his lap and playing with his hands over the fretboard. Combined with his soulful vocals, Healey’s expressive guitar playing gave him a sound and style that were entirely his own.

Healey achieved international recognition with the Jeff Healey Band’s 1988 debut album, See the Light. Alongside bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen, Healey introduced a much wider audience to his remarkable guitar work through songs such as Angel Eyes, Confidence Man, and See the Light. Angel Eyes became a major hit, while the band’s profile grew even further through the 1989 Patrick Swayze film Road House. Healey appeared as Cody, the singer and guitarist of the house band at the Double Deuce, with the Jeff Healey Band performing throughout the film.

Healey spent much of the following years recording and touring, while also performing with musicians including B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and George Harrison. His interests reached far beyond blues rock. A passionate student and collector of early jazz, Healey also played traditional jazz, collected thousands of vintage 78-rpm records, and hosted radio programs devoted to the music he loved. He died in 2008 at the age of 41 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a musical legacy that extended well beyond the guitar style for which he first became famous.
