Duran Duran

Duran Duran is an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1978 by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and guitarist John Taylor. After several early lineup changes, the familiar lineup came together with vocalist Simon Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor, and keyboardist Nick Rhodes. Mixing new wave, pop, rock, dance music, and synthesizers with an unmistakable sense of style, Duran Duran arrived just as music videos were becoming an essential part of popular culture. Their self-titled debut appeared in 1981, followed by Rio in 1982 and songs such as Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, and Rio that helped turn the band into international stars.
Duran Duran didn’t just sound right for the 1980s—they looked made for the emerging MTV generation. Their ambitious and often exotic music videos became nearly as recognizable as the songs themselves, helping the band build an enormous audience on both sides of the Atlantic. Seven and the Ragged Tiger followed in 1983, producing The Reflex and Union of the Snake, while A View to a Kill gave Duran Duran the distinction of recording the only James Bond theme to reach No. 1 in the United States. Despite lineup changes and shifting musical trends, the band continued producing memorable songs, including Notorious, Ordinary World, and Come Undone.
More than four decades after their breakthrough, Duran Duran has remained a remarkably active recording and touring band. The group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, won two Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Their longevity has taken them from the early days of Birmingham’s Rum Runner nightclub to major arenas and concert stages around the world, while their music has continued to reach audiences well beyond the generation that first discovered them on MTV.
