Atreyu is an American rock band formed in Orange County, California, in 1998. Originally known as Retribution, the group developed around vocalist Alex Varkatzas, drummer and vocalist Brandon Saller, and guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel. Combining metalcore with elements of hardcore punk, heavy metal, and melodic rock, Atreyu became known for heavy guitar riffs, breakdowns, and the contrast between Varkatzas’ aggressive vocals and Saller’s melodic singing. After building a following through early demos and EPs, the band signed with Victory Records and released its debut album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, in 2002.

Atreyu expanded its audience with The Curse in 2004, featuring songs such as Right Side of the Bed and The Crimson. A Death-Grip on Yesterday followed in 2006 and reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. The band’s sound continued to evolve with Lead Sails Paper Anchor in 2007, which included Becoming the Bull and Falling Down and brought more hard-rock and melodic elements into the mix. Atreyu followed with Congregation of the Damned in 2009 before stepping away for several years.

After reuniting in 2014, Atreyu returned with Long Live in 2015 and continued recording and touring. Another major change came with the departure of Alex Varkatzas in 2020, after which Brandon Saller moved from behind the drum kit to become the band’s primary vocalist. With longtime guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel remaining central to the sound, Atreyu entered a new era with albums including Baptize and The Beautiful Dark of Life. More than two decades after its breakthrough, the band continues to release music and perform for audiences around the world.
