Al Di Meola is an American guitarist, composer, and bandleader known for his technical ability, distinctive picking style, and versatility across jazz fusion and instrumental guitar. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1954, Di Meola studied at Berklee College of Music before joining Chick Corea’s Return to Forever in 1974 at just 19 years old. Playing alongside Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White, he quickly established himself as a remarkable young guitarist, combining speed and precision with the complex rhythms and improvisation that defined the band’s fusion sound.

After his time with Return to Forever, Di Meola launched his solo career with Land of the Midnight Sun in 1976. The following year brought Elegant Gypsy, one of the defining albums of his career. Mediterranean Sundance and the fiery Race with Devil on Spanish Highway showcased two different sides of his guitar playing, while later albums including Casino, Splendido Hotel, and Electric Rendezvous continued his exploration of jazz fusion, rock, Latin, and other musical influences.

Another important chapter came through Di Meola’s collaboration with fellow guitarists John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía. Their extraordinary live performances produced Friday Night in San Francisco, released in 1981 and now regarded as a landmark acoustic-guitar album. Di Meola continued broadening his musical interests in the decades that followed, including through his World Sinfonia projects and music influenced by Latin, Mediterranean, and other traditions. After more than five decades as a professional musician, he continues to record and perform internationally.
